The benefits of working with an oncology dietitian:
Benefit #1
Oncology dietitians have superior credentials & experience
Cancer Nutrition Care (CNC) Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN’s) are food & nutrition experts that are either board certified in oncology nutrition (RDN, CSO) or have many years of experience working directly with cancer patients. RDN education, certification and experience make CNC oncology dietitians the superior choice over “nutritionists”, “health coaches” and others that have more basic credentials and little or no clinical experience.
Benefit #2
Receive trusted, evidence-based solutions
CNC oncology dietitians have access to the ever-changing evidence-based cancer research and clinical recommendations which are critical when creating individualized nutrition plans. Trustworthy information and guidance is important when trying to maintain your functional capacity and quality-of-life, avoid complications, and stay on your prescribed treatment regimen(s).
Benefit #3
Minimize the impact of cancer-induced malnutrition
Surveys show that up to 80% of cancer patients develop clinical malnutrition at some point in their treatment since both the disease and cancer therapies can significantly compromise nutritional status. This is a big problem since 10% to 20% of cancer patient deaths are a direct consequence of cancer-induced malnutrition, not the disease.
Benefit #4
Maintain your treatment regimens
Oncology dietitians can help you better tolerate prescribed treatment regimens by working with you to avoid complications and treatment toxicity. Some cancer treatments create a variety of unwanted side effects that can impact your ability to eat and/or absorb nutrients. Examples include changes in taste & aroma, potential mouth and throat soreness, nausea and other gastrointestinal stress like stomach pains and diarrhea.
Benefit #5
Obtain superior surgical outcomes
Preoperative nutritional support of patients treated with surgery has been shown to help build and maintain nutritional status which can help reduce the number and severity of post-operative complications
Benefit #6
Confirm your supplements are safe & effective
Dietary supplements may have risks and side effects and could be outright unsafe. Supplements can interfere with cancer treatment regimens, prescription medications, and other supplements. Also, the quality of dietary supplements, and active ingredient concentrations, can vary widely from brand to brand. Current research does not support utilizing dietary supplements to reduce the risk of disease or treat chronic conditions such as cancer.
Benefit #7
Understand what foods to eat & avoid
Oncology dietitians can help you understand what foods to focus on and what foods to avoid. This is important as sometimes food-drug issues are a factor. Depending on your diagnosis, food malabsorption and/or nutrient deficiencies may be issues that need to be planned for.
Benefit #8
Confirm the value of alternative therapies
Complementary & alternative cancer therapies include a wide variety of botanical, “natural”, and “nutritional” remedies such as herbal products, vitamins, and other supplements. These products are not reviewed by the FDA and may include false marketing claims. Understanding what is both safe and effective is critical.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Oncology Dietitian?
With less than 1% of U.S. dietitians having earned the oncology certification, this specialization is quite unique! Oncology Dietitians are board Certified Specialists in Oncology Nutrition (“CSO” credential). Like other registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN’s), oncology dietitians are food & nutrition experts first, having satisfied all the basic requirements of the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Beyond this they have extensive knowledge and experience working with patients that are currently undergoing cancer therapies, healing from cancer treatments, and also helping patients with cancer prevention. You can learn more about RDN education and credentialing at www.eatrightpro.org.
Is there a specific diet recommended for those with cancer?
With cancer, one type of diet never fits all so the quick answer would have to be…no. In practice there are many elements that factor into oncology nutrition recommendations. Variables like cancer type and progression, treatment regimens, and side effects all need to be considered. CNC Oncology Dietitians work with patients to understand their individual needs and then, accordingly, personalize a diet plan and course of action.
Do you take insurance?
At this time CNC does not take insurance. We are set up to generate “superbills” however. These invoices are formatted in a way consistent with what insurance companies are looking for. A superbill receipt for our services can be sent to you so you can submit a claim to your insurance provider.
Do you do business in my state?
Maybe. The dietetics industry is regulated and about half of the states require RDN’s be licensed to practice. With that said, the other half of states allow out-of-state dietitians to practice. Please click on the link below to see if we practice in your state. CNC fully respects each state’s laws for licensure in regard to providing medical nutrition therapy and other forms of nutritional counseling & coaching.
